IN THE MIDST OF WAR
Ceiling Mural at 30 Rock What a difference.

From la primavera in Italy to springtime in the States. War, embeds, 13-hour workdays and catered food.

I love the smell of sterno in the morning.

The buds have begun appearing on the scraggly yet hearty trees that line the streets of Manhattan. You have to marvel at their resilience -- these trees that take a stronghold in concrete. Spring really is one of the most beautiful times in New York.

It, therefore, feels particularly disconcerting to be at war as we enter a season of new beginnings. I returned to New York City just in time for the war to commence. Days and nights filled with tracking military movements, learning the names of weaponry and nomenclatures for soldiers, sailors, airmen, special forces, and, oh yeah -- embeds.

There are fears that terrorists might storm broadcast centers. Hell, they don't need to invade, they just need to bring food.

The polls in the United States show wildly swaying reaction to the war -- perhaps dependent on which television play-by-play they've just watched. Schisms between Republicans and Democrats. Women and men. Parents and kids.

The President's approval rating, however, has been fairly consistent. We're told some three-quarters (give or take) of Americans support him.

And yet I hear so many people ask "where are these 75% approvers? I don't know one of them."

Why is that?
